Lucky bastard, not cold enough here yet.

Lucky bastard

You’re not wrong. Outdoor hockey is some of the best hockey.

I love me a proper pickup game, but there’s something special about good, informal shinny.

You need something like this - all the better if located between high cost dubious quality mansionettes:

If I lived in the frozen wastelands (in an area where housing is reasonable for those who aren’t in a trust fund or laundering money - hello 416) the chances of me having this would be around 100%.

Nothing but agreement from this guy. However back yard space is nil and the rink is a 5 minute walk away, I think I’m doing OK :)

Is this a thing in cold suburbs?

Lucky. The only outdoor rink we have here is covered by a tent, artificial (as it seldom drops below freezing by much), and not for hockey - which is for the best as the ice is pretty wet.

I have to imagine it isn’t unknown in non-coastal areas of Canuckistan. I’ve seen DIY kits for it.

These are artificial too. All the official city rinks have coils under them, that way they don’t have to shut down if you get a weird temperature spike. And weird as it sounds, sun is worse for the ice than outright warm weather. If it’s cloudy, then with the freezers it holds fairly well even up to +10C. Conversely the ice would be crap without some help on a sunny -1C day

Where the yards are big enough, it’s quite common.

Absolutely a thing if you’ve got space for it.

I suspect the local ice-making talent is also pretty decent there. The skill isn’t as honed in the PNW - not to mention the availability of ice.
